Chemistry emphasizes problem solving and the use of models to represent chemical events and phenomena. The text’s general approach to problem solving, or “conceptual problem solving,” is framed in terms of the questions “Where are we going?” and “How do we get there?,” the solution, and a “Reality Check” evaluation of the solution’s reasonableness. “Interactive Examples” of problem-solving strategies are integrated throughout the text and provide step-by-step guidance in obtaining solutions and reference similar problems in end-of-chapter exercises. Specific problem-solving strategies (e.g., “Solving a Stoichiometry Problem Involving Masses of Reactants and Products”) are highlighted in textboxes and illustrated in subsequent examples.

Instruction in the use of models begins with a clear explanation of each model and accompanying illustrations followed by the quantitative expression of the model. Students learn to construct and test models and evaluate their failures. End-of-chapter activities include sets of multiple-choice and free-response questions formatted to reflect the AP exam.

McGraw-Hill's Chang Chemistry Learning List has reviewed McGraw Hill’s AP (Chang) Chemistry, 12th Edition. The course is a comprehensive resource that supports instruction in high school Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry courses. Content is available in print and digital formats with additional online resources. Chang Chemistry provides a straightforward introduction to the concepts, principles, and theories of chemistry through guided inquiry and problem solving activities.

The text’s first chapter introduces core principles in the study of chemistry (e.g., states of matter, the scientific method) and strategies for chemical problem solving. Subsequent chapters address key concepts (e.g., acids and bases) while maintaining a strong connection to the College Board’s big ideas and essential knowledge statements. Each chapter begins with an outline of the chapter (i.e., section titles and page numbers), an “AP Big Ideas: A Look Ahead” feature, and a set of essential questions. Look Ahead introduces content in the context of the big ideas addressed by the chapter.  Essential questions reference the relevant essential knowledge statement(s) of the course framework (e.g., “What is a gas? 2.A.2”).

Each chapter ends with practice problems reference the relevant chapter sections and require students to demonstrate quantitative reasoning, conceptual understanding, and critical thinking thinking skills. Some chapters include a “Chemical Mystery” activity that presents a real-world mystery for students to solve using chemistry skills (e.g., “Who Killed Napoleon?”). The activity begins with a short narrative explaining the mystery followed by a set of “Chemical Clues” for students to consider.

Instruction emphasizes problem solving and the process and contemporary applications of chemistry, including advances in computing.

The text features vivid photographs and illustrations to support understanding. “Macroscopic-to-microscopic” illustrations combine a photograph of a chemical event (e.g., aqueous ionic reaction) with an illustration of the event at the microscopic molecular level and include the symbolic representation of the event. Frequent sample problems are provided. Sample problems have step-by-step solutions that demonstrate the plansolvecheck approach and include “Follow-Up” practice problems. Some sample problems contain illustrations and “Road Map” tips (e.g., “103mL = 1L”) to help students better understand the solution strategy.

Chapters contain “Tools of the Laboratory” and “Chemical Connections” articles. Tools of the Laboratory discusses tools, techniques, and procedures used in the chemistry lab. Chemical Connections (e.g. Chemical Connections to Environmental Science) provide the the connection between chemistry and other fields of study. Learning List recently reviewed WileyPLUS’s The Molecular Nature of Matter, which is a comprehensive, advanced high school chemistry course. Resources include online and print materials. Instruction focuses on developing students’ conceptual understanding, problem solving skills, and knowledge of the real-world application of chemistry concepts. Content supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry courses. A first-year chemistry course is recommended as a prerequisite.

The Molecular Nature of Matter begins with a short history of chemistry that provides a foundation for understanding the course’s approach to molecules and chemical reactions. Subsequent chapters address the factual and conceptual content that forms the basis for developing theoretical models in chemistry.  Chapters include “Chem FAQ” interactive slide shows that address common student questions (e.g., “What is an atomic mass unit?”). Some chapters include video demonstrations of chemistry concepts and/or links to PhET interactive simulations hosted by the University of Colorado.

Course resources facilitate teacher-led instruction and student self-study, and the program includes ORION online adaptive study and practice software, which offers individualized instruction. Students complete a diagnostic assessment that evaluates their understanding of chapter content by objective and prescribes customized “Study” and “Practice” activities tailored to their individual learning needs. The Study feature of the program recommends sections of the e-text for students to read or review. Practice uses adaptive software to customize practice problems for each student.
