College Board Example List – AP Physics Resources

New Review: Cengage Learning’s College Physics AP Edition (Serway), 11th Edition

Cengage's Serway Physics AP editionCengage Learning’s College Physics AP Edition (Serway), 11th Edition, is a comprehensive product that supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) Physics 1 and AP Physics 2 courses. Content is available in print and digital formats and includes additional online components. Instruction provides an introduction to concepts in classical and 21st century physics, emphasizing real-world applications and problem solving. Learning List recently reviewed print resources for College Physics.

Core content is presented in six parts: (1) Mechanics, (2) Thermodynamics, (3) Vibrations and Waves, (4) Electricity and Magnetism, (5) Light and Optics, and (6) Modern Physics. Parts are made up of two or more “topics,” or chapters, that address key concepts (e.g., the laws of thermodynamics, magnetism). Instruction emphasizes problem-solving and the text’s first topic ends with a section that presents a structured, eight-step, general process for solving problems. Throughout the text, a “Problem-Solving Strategy” feature adapts the general strategy to specific situations (e.g., problems involving accelerated motion). Frequent example problems demonstrate the applications of strategies.

The text includes an “Applying Physics” feature that helps students connect physics to real-world problems (e.g., the likelihood of an injury in a car accident) and other scientific disciplines (e.g., biology). Applying Physics examples serve as models for “Conceptual Questions” that appear at the end of each topic.

New Review: WileyPLUS’s Comprehensive, Advanced High School Physics Course

physics wiley

[Source: Wiley Publishing]

Learning List recently reviewed WileyPLUS’s comprehensive, advanced high school physics course that includes online and print materials. Instruction focuses on developing students’ conceptual understanding, problem solving skills, and knowledge of the real-world application of physics concepts. Content supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) Physics courses. A first-year physics course and Algebra 2 are recommended as prerequisites.

The Physics course begins with a review of key math concepts and skills (e.g., symbolic manipulation, the quadratic formula), and then addresses physics concepts (e.g., force, momentum, energy, optics) with a focus on problem solving and the examination of real-world phenomena through the lens of physics.

The course has frequent example problems with complete solutions. Textboxes highlight and review the math skills needed to solve problems.  Example problems are followed by two or more similar practice exercises for students to solve independently. Some practice problems include “Chalkboard Video” tutorials that provide step-by-step guidance in solving problems and discuss common misconceptions and mistakes.  Other problems are accompanied by “Video Help” or “Guided Online” (GO) tutorials to facilitate solutions.

Assessment resources include a downloadable test bank of multiple choice questions and answer key for each chapter. Test bank items are editable and indexed by chapter section and level of difficulty.

New Review: OpenStax College’s College Physics for AP Courses

[Source: OpenStax College]

Learning List recently reviewed OpenStax College’s College Physics for AP Courses, which is a comprehensive, open education resource (OER) resource that supports Advanced Placement (AP) physics instruction at the high school level. Instruction covers two college semesters and addresses the content for AP Physics 1 and 2. The course is available online at no cost (; low-cost print and eBooks are also available.

The first half of College Physics for AP Courses covers material for AP Physics 1, including kinematics, Newton’s laws, motion, force, energy, oscillating motion and waves, electricity and currents. The second half addresses AP Physics 2, including fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, optics, quantum mechanics, atomic and nuclear physics. Instruction is organized in terms of physics concepts and begins with detailed definitions of terminology and explanations of concepts. As lessons progress, students learn how concepts are relevant to real-world phenomena. Frequent example problems frame how concepts can be used to understand and solve every day problems (e.g., What acceleration can a person produce when pushing a lawn mower?). Example problems provide step-by-step guidance in identifying mathematical solutions and detailed discussions of problem-solving strategies. The text provides frequent opportunities for students to apply what they have learned and check their understanding using problems presented in textboxes (e.g., “Applying the Science Practices” and “Check Your Understanding”). Other textboxes highlight formulas, note important and/or interesting information, and identify frequent misconceptions.

College Physics for AP Courses is an open-source resource that encourages science educators to submit new information and course material to ensure instruction is accurate, up-to-date, and relevant to students’ lives. Content is math dependent; students will need a strong understanding of concepts in algebra and statistics in order to be successful. The course does not include a laboratory component, so a separate laboratory manual will be needed in order to fully address the AP Science Practices.
