New Review: Cosenza & Associates’ Algebraic Reasoning

Cosenza & Associates' Algebraic ReasoningLearning List has reviewed Cosenza & Associates’ Algebraic Reasoning. This comprehensive product supports instruction in Texas algebraic reasoning courses. Content is available in print and digital formats and includes additional online tutorials. Instruction is inquiry based and covers the attributes of functions, systems of equations, modeling with functions and data, and approaches to solving equations. Teacher and student materials contain clear links to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPs).

Algebraic Reasoning is organized in eight chapters: (1) Algebraic Patterns, (2) Analyzing Functions, (3) Inverses of Functions, (4) Function Operations, (5) Algebraic Methods, (6) Matrices, (7) Solutions of Equations, and (8) Data Modeling. Content is presented using the 5E model of instruction (i.e., engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate) and is presented simply with a clear writing style that should be accessible for high school students. Frequent examples provide clear, step-by-step guidance in problem-solving strategies followed by “You Try It!” practice problems.

Resources include blackline masters of four versions of mid-chapter and end-of-chapter assessments, including a modified version for students with special learning needs. Editable versions (i.e., Word versions) of a mid-term and final exam and a culminating course project are available. Each test includes multiple-choice and free response items. The culminating project requires students to independently identify and analyze a data set related to a topic of interest.  Teachers also have access to the ExamView® assessment software that allows users to create customized assessments.

At each grade of these grade levels, STAAR Mission Math provides sets of lessons that support students in mastering specific TEKS and preparing for standardized tests. Lessons are organized using the 5E instructional model (i.e., Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) and include videos, activity sheets, hands-on activities, and opportunities for formative and summative assessment. Instruction incorporates multiple representations of concepts and math journals in which students keep track of new vocabulary, record their conclusions, and reflect on what they have learned.

Teacher resources include a downloadable one-page lesson plan for each lesson, blackline masters of student handouts, and answer keys. Lesson plans include an overview, links to the relevant TEKS, and step-by-step guidance in implementing the 5E lesson cycle, including steps to prepare the lesson and discussion questions.
