New Review: Cengage Learning’s Chemistry (Zumdahl), AP Edition, 10th Edition

Cengage Learning's Chemistry (Zumdahl)Learning List has reviewed print resources for Cengage Learning’s Chemistry (Zumdahl), AP Edition, 10th Edition. This comprehensive product supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry courses. Content is available in print and eBook formats with additional online components. Instruction emphasizes modeling, problem solving, and the real-world applications of chemistry.

Chemistry emphasizes problem solving and the use of models to represent chemical events and phenomena. The text’s general approach to problem solving, or “conceptual problem solving,” is framed in terms of the questions “Where are we going?” and “How do we get there?,” the solution, and a “Reality Check” evaluation of the solution’s reasonableness. “Interactive Examples” of problem-solving strategies are integrated throughout the text and provide step-by-step guidance in obtaining solutions and reference similar problems in end-of-chapter exercises. Specific problem-solving strategies (e.g., “Solving a Stoichiometry Problem Involving Masses of Reactants and Products”) are highlighted in textboxes and illustrated in subsequent examples.

Instruction in the use of models begins with a clear explanation of each model and accompanying illustrations followed by the quantitative expression of the model. Students learn to construct and test models and evaluate their failures. End-of-chapter activities include sets of multiple-choice and free-response questions formatted to reflect the AP exam.

New Review: Cengage Learning Calculus (Larson), 11th Edition, AP Edition

Cengage Learning's AP Calculus (Larson)Learning List has reviewed Cengage Learning’s Calculus (Larson), 11th Edition, AP Edition. This is a comprehensive course for Advanced Placement (AP) calculus. Resources are available in print format and include some online resources. Instruction is designed specifically for AP courses and provides guidance in preparing for and taking AP exams. The text covers content for AP Calculus AB and BC courses.

Calculus opens with preface that discusses the AP Calculus exam and test preparation strategies. Core content is presented in 16 chapters that present content in a linear and logical manner. The first half of the course begins with a “Chapter P: Preparation for Calculus” that reviews key concepts needed for the study of calculus (e.g., linear models, rates of change, inverse functions), and then covers limits, differentiation, integration, differential equations, integration techniques, and logarithmic, exponential, and transcendental functions. The second half of the course addresses infinite series; conics, parametric equations, and polar coordinates; vectors and the geometry of space; vector-valued functions; functions of several variables; multiple integration; and vector analysis. Chapter 16 is available online and presents “Additional Topics in Differential Equations,” such as first-order equations and series solutions of differential equations.

Instruction supports discovery learning and the synthesis of the College Board’s big ideas for AP Calculus. Margin notes throughout the text support students’ preparation for AP exams and end-of-chapter exercises include questions formatted to reflect the AP exam. The level of rigor in instruction, in problem sets, and in AP Practice Questions matches that of the AP exam.

New Review: Cengage Learning’s College Physics AP Edition (Serway), 11th Edition

Cengage's Serway Physics AP editionCengage Learning’s College Physics AP Edition (Serway), 11th Edition, is a comprehensive product that supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) Physics 1 and AP Physics 2 courses. Content is available in print and digital formats and includes additional online components. Instruction provides an introduction to concepts in classical and 21st century physics, emphasizing real-world applications and problem solving. Learning List recently reviewed print resources for College Physics.

Core content is presented in six parts: (1) Mechanics, (2) Thermodynamics, (3) Vibrations and Waves, (4) Electricity and Magnetism, (5) Light and Optics, and (6) Modern Physics. Parts are made up of two or more “topics,” or chapters, that address key concepts (e.g., the laws of thermodynamics, magnetism). Instruction emphasizes problem-solving and the text’s first topic ends with a section that presents a structured, eight-step, general process for solving problems. Throughout the text, a “Problem-Solving Strategy” feature adapts the general strategy to specific situations (e.g., problems involving accelerated motion). Frequent example problems demonstrate the applications of strategies.

The text includes an “Applying Physics” feature that helps students connect physics to real-world problems (e.g., the likelihood of an injury in a car accident) and other scientific disciplines (e.g., biology). Applying Physics examples serve as models for “Conceptual Questions” that appear at the end of each topic.

New Review: Cengage Learning’s Making America: A History of the United States (Berkin) 7th Edition

CengageCengage Learning Learning’s Making America: A History of the United States (Berkin), 7th Edition, is a comprehensive resource that supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) U.S. History courses. Content is available in print and digital formats, with additional online components.  Learning List recently reviewed Making America’s print resources.

Instruction provides a thematic examination of U.S. history that considers the social, economic, cultural, and political forces that have shaped the country. Content is organized chronologically and integrates five key themes: (1) the nation’s political development, (2) diverse national citizenship, (3) the importance of regional subcultures and economies, (4) the influence of social movements (e.g., Post-World War II youth culture), and (5) America’s relationships with other nations.

Chapters begin with an “American Choices” feature that provides a profile of an individual whose experiences reflect the themes of the period and end with an “Individual Voices” feature that provides a primary source document related to the individual. For example, chapter 12 “Responses to Expansion and Change, 1828-1848” opens with a profile of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the suffragist, abolitionist, and early women’s rights activist and ends with Stanton’s “Declaration of Sentiments” statement on the conditions of women that was presented at the Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention in 1848.
