Career and Technical Education: Principles of Health Science

Learning List has reviewed each of the six Proclamation 2017 CTE products that have been state adopted for Principles of Health Science.  Please find a brief overview of each product below:surgery

  1. Applied Educational Systems’ HealthCenter21 is a comprehensive, digital curriculum that provides a library of learning modules that support teacher-led and self-directed study and facilitate instruction in blended learning environments. Instruction prepares students for the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) certification exams.
  1. E. Publishing’s Introduction to Health Care in a Flash! An Interactive, Flash-Card Approach covers basic concepts in anatomy and physiology and introduces students to careers in the health care field. Instruction discusses how different cultures, customs, and religious beliefs may affect a patient’s health care choices. Materials are available in print format with additional online components.
  1. Cengage Learning’s DHO [Diversified Health Occupations] Health Science, 8th Edition, provides an overview of the knowledge and skills needed for a wide range of health care professions as well as the specific skills needed to prepare for some careers (e.g., dental assistant). Instruction provides opportunities for students to practice implementing medical procedures (e.g., donning and removing transmission-based isolation garments). Resources are available in print format and include additional online components. 
  1. CEV Multimedia’s Principles of Health Science presents content in PowerPoint and video lessons. Instruction begins with a set of lessons addressing general topics (e.g., professional communication, mathematics in health science), followed by lessons addressing human development (e.g., fetal and infant, adolescent male), workplace skills (e.g., leadership styles, managing people), and health informatics, diagnostic and support services, and biotechnology research. 
  1. Goodheart-Willcox’s Introduction to Health Science: Pathways to Your Future, 1st Edition, introduces students to the knowledge and skills needed to for entry-level occupations in the health science career cluster. Instruction addresses the Precision Exams’ Health Science Standards and prepares students for the Precision Exams’ Standards and Career Skills Exam and certification. Resources support instruction in blended learning environments.
  1. Pearson’s Principles of Health Science, Texas Edition, covers the knowledge and skills needed for a variety of entry-level jobs in the medical field and includes cross-curricular links to content in math, science, and language arts. Frequent application activities are integrated throughout instruction. Resources are available in print and eBook formats.

New Review: Cengage Learning’s The American Pageant, 16th Edition

Cengage's The American Pageant

Learning List has reviewed Cengage Learning’s The American Pageant, 16th Edition, which is a comprehensive resource that supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) United States History courses. Content is available in print and eBook formats and includes additional online components. The text provides a narrative discussion of U.S. history focusing on the political, economic, societal, and cultural forces that have shaped the country.

The American Pageant is organized in five chronological parts that begin with early Native American societies (ca 33,000 B.C.E.) and end with contemporary events (i.e., 2014). Each chapter begins with a short quote from a key individual of the period and a brief introduction. Textboxes present short quotes from diverse individuals from the period (e.g., an African American woman describing her experiences in the Jim Crow South, and John F. Kennedy).

Resources include a sets of multiple-choice and short-answer questions formatted to reflect what students will see on the AP exam, including stimulus-based questions. The text includes a section titled “Practice Materials for the AP United States History Examination” that contains document-based questions and long essay questions to help students prepare for the exam.

New Review: Cengage Learning’s Calculus for AP

Learning List recently reviewed Cengage Learning’s Calculus for AP, which is is a comprehensive single-variable course for Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus AB and BC courses. Resources are available in print format and include some online resources. Instruction is designed specifically for AP courses and provides guidance in preparing for and taking AP exams.

Calculus for AP is comprised of ten chapters that present content in a linear and logical manner and focus on the application of calculus to real-world problems. Margin notes throughout the text highlight the use of the Mathematical Practices for AP Calculus (MPACs). Textboxes highlight key theorems and definitions and illustrate how to use technology, such as graphing calculators, to solve problems and highlight the potential “pitfalls” of technology.  Instruction includes “Exploration” activities that present a topic that has not yet been introduced in the text and allow students to discover new concepts and how they relate to the current topic of study. Some chapter sections include projects that provide opportunities for students to work collaboratively and extend their learning.

End-of-section and chapter exercises include problems that reflect the rigor and format of problems on the AP exam. Odd-numbered section and chapter problems have answers provided at the back of the text; tutorial support and completed solutions are available at “CalcChat.com.” Problems with a QR Code have step-by-step video solutions that may be accessed using a smartphone with a QR Code reader or through “CalcView.com.”

National Geographic Learning/ Cengage Learning’s Biology: The Unity and Diversity of Life is a comprehensive biology course that supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) Biology courses.  Resources are available in print and eBook formats. Learning List recently reviewed eBook and digital materials for the course.

Biology: The Unity and Diversity of Life begins with a chapter that introduces the course’s themes (i.e., how living things are alike and different), the scientific method and experiments in biology, analysis of experimental results, and the limits of science. Subsequent chapters address cellular life, genetics, evolution, biodiversity, plants, animals, and ecology. eBooks contain vivid photographs, illustrations, and animations that help clarify concepts. Information about key figures and their contributions to science (e.g., Georges Cuvier), issue-related essays, and case studies are integrated throughout instruction.

Online materials to accompany chapter beginnings include a “How Would You Vote?” feature, that presents an issue related to the chapter’s content (e.g., What is the best way to deal with viral infections?). Students share their views in a discussion forum and choose a response (i.e., vote) from a set of multiple choice answers.  The question is revisited again at the close of the chapter to see if students’ thinking has changed. Online resources include highlighting and note taking tools, an audio reader, an interactive dictionary and glossary, flashcards of key terms and vocabulary, and an online study guide for each chapter, and a set of apps to support homework, study skills, and biology content.

Cengage Learning’s New Perspectives on Computer Concepts 2016, Comprehensive, is a comprehensive resource that supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science Principles courses.  Content is available in print and eBook formats, and additional online materials are available from Cengage. Learning List has reviewed the course’s eBook and online content.Instruction begins with an introduction, “The Digital Revolution,” that provides the history of digital technology and its role in social, political, and economic change. Subsequent chapters address digital content, digital devices, networks, the Web, social media, software, digital security, the ICT industry, information systems, databases, and programming. Instruction addresses the real-world applications of computer science and its role in a wide range of careers. The course includes articles that explore the controversial issues in computer science (e.g., data mining) and new developments (e.g., cloud technology) in the field.When accessing the course eBook through Cengage’s CourseMate LMS, students have access to an audio reader, highlighting and note taking tools, a searchable course glossary and general purpose dictionary (i.e., Mirriam-Webster), and interactive flashcards of key terms. Other online resources include tools to create customized study guides and SAM (Skills Assessment Manager) resources that provide training and assessment in Microsoft Office software and technology-related topics.
