How Learning List Helps Districts Comply with ESSA’s “Evidence Based” Requirement

A recent report from Curriculum Associates discusses the Every Student Succeeds Act’s (ESSA) requirement that federal education funds be used for evidence-based programs, interventions, and products. “ESSA and Evidence Claims: A Practical Guide to Understanding What ‘Evidence-Based’ Really Means” provides a primer for educators in understanding the four levels of evidence recognized by ESSA (e.g., moderate evidence), the type of study that exemplifies each level (e.g., quasi-experimental), and the five questions educators should ask when evaluating research-based evidence (e.g., “When was the study conducted?”).

One of five questions for evaluating evidence, in particular, caught Learning List’s attention: “Was the study based on current content and standards?”

ESSA assumes that the evidence base for a product, program, or service is based on the state’s current standards, but it is possible that the research is grounded in prior state standards or another state’s standards, altogether. It is the district’s responsibility to vet information to ensure products purchased with federal funds and the evidence supporting the products’ effectiveness are based on the appropriate standards.

A tall order but Learning List can help.

Learning List’s alignment reports clarify which set of standards a product addresses, such as the Common Core State Standards or the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Our alignment reports evaluate the product’s alignment, determining whether the material fully addresses the content, context, and cognitive demand of each of the relevant standards. Thus, Learning List’s alignment reports provide strong evidence about whether a product is grounded in the relevant standards. [Read more…]

New Review: i-Ready

[Source: Curriculum Associates]

i-Ready provides supplemental, online resources to support instruction and intervention in mathematics and reading for students in grades K-12. The program uses an adaptive diagnostic assessment to identify individual student strengths and learning gaps and prescribes teacher-led instruction and online tutorials tailored to particular learning needs. Learning List recently reviewed reading and math resources for grades K-8.

An adaptive, diagnostic assessment is the core of the i-Ready instructional program. In reading, the diagnostic assesses students’ learning level in the following domains: phonological awareness (K and 1), high-frequency words (K-3), phonics (K-4), vocabulary (K-8), and reading comprehension for literary and informational texts (K-8). Across grades K-8, the math diagnostic assesses students’ learning in numbers and operations, measurement and data, algebra and algebraic thinking, and geometry.

Based on the results of the diagnostic assessments, students are assigned individualized learning paths made up of online video tutorials and teacher-led lessons. Assessment results also recommend students with similar learning needs for teacher-led, small group instruction.

In video tutorials, age-appropriate animated characters provide direct instruction and lead students through guided practice activities. Tutorials are interactive and provide immediate corrective feedback and explanations of why an answer is or is not correct. Tutorials end with a quiz which students must pass with a score of 70% or higher (teachers may reset passing scores). Downloadable resources that support teacher-led individual, small group, or whole group instruction include “Step by Step” lesson plans and “Ways to Teach” activities. Step by Step lesson plans provide in depth instruction in a single skill. Ways to Teach suggests several activities or approaches to teaching a skill or reinforcing student learning.

New Review: Curriculum Associates’ Ready Florida English Language Arts

[Source: Curriculum Associates]

Learning List has reviewed print materials for Curriculum Associates’ Ready Florida English Language Arts program. Ready Florida is a supplemental resource for grades K-8 that supports reading instruction and mastery of the Language Arts Florida Standards (LAFS). Materials are available in print format with additional online components. Instruction addresses grade-level LAFS while developing students’ critical thinking skills and understanding of literary and informational texts.

Ready Florida English Language Arts Student Instruction Books present content in units that address LAFS Anchor Standards (e.g., Craft and Structure in Literature). Units are made up of week-long lessons that focus on a particular theme (e.g., adventure) and genre (e.g., realistic fiction). Instruction is structured using the Gradual Release of Responsibility (i.e., GRR) instructional model. The first day of each lesson is an Introduction that provides a student-friendly explanation of what students will learn (i.e., the standard), reading strategies, and the steps to follow to implement strategies. Subsequent days provide Modeled and Guided Instruction, Guided Practice, and Independent Practice. Each day includes a writing activity.

At each grade level, “Teacher Resource Books” contain materials to assist teachers in the transition to the LAFS and to use Ready Florida materials. Resource Books provide a crosswalk document that explains how the Ready Florida program addresses the demands of the LAFS, and a table detailing the research supporting Ready Florida language arts strategies (e.g., close reading, scaffolded instruction). A pair of tables (1) identify lesson activities and problems that require higher level thinking as measured by Webb’s Depth of Knowledge index, and (2) present a “Cognitive Rigor Matrix” that combines Webb’s and Bloom’s indicators of higher-level thinking and describes student behaviors that demonstrate higher-level thinking.

New Review: Curriculum Associates’ STAAR Ready Math

Screen Shot 2016-03-11 at 12.18.32 PM

[Source: Curriculum Associates]

Learning List has reviewed Curriculum Associates’ STAAR Ready Math. This supplemental resource supports math instruction and preparation for Texas’s STAAR testing for students in grades 1-8. Materials are available in print format. Content addresses grade-level TEKS while developing students’ understanding of key concepts and ability to apply concepts in problem solving activities.

Content is presented in units organized by the STAAR Performance Categories (e.g., Measurement and Graphing). Units are made up of short, scaffolded lessons that focus on one or more TEKS. Instruction is organized using the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) model and includes direct instruction, modeling, and guided and independent practice.

At each grade level, “Teacher Guides” contain tools to help teachers transition to the new mathematics TEKS. Guides provide a crosswalk document that explains how the STAAR Ready program addresses the demands of the TEKS, including the process standards. A pair of tables (1) identify lesson activities and problems that require higher level thinking as measured by Webb’s Depth of Knowledge index, and (2) present a “Cognitive Rigor Matrix” that combines Webb’s and Bloom’s indicators of high level thinking and describes student behaviors that demonstrate higher-level thinking. Teacher Guides also have correlation tables for lesson activities and STAAR Practice problems.

New Review: Curriculum Associates’ Ready Florida MAFS

CCS-1235b_FL-OverviewGraphic4_Math

[Source: Curriculum Associates]

Learning List has reviewed Curriculum Associates’ Ready Florida MAFS, a supplemental resource for grades K-8 that supports math instruction and mastery of the Mathematics Florida Standards (MAFS). Materials are available in print format with additional online components. Learning List’s review is of print materials only. Across grades, instruction addresses grade-specific MAFS while developing students’ understanding of key concepts and their ability to apply concepts to solve real-world problems.

Ready Florida MAFS Student Instruction Books structure instruction at each grade in units organized by the MAFS Domains (e.g., Measurement and Data). Units open with a short feature that describes what students will learn and the real-world applications of content. Instruction is presented in short, scaffolded lessons that focus on one or more MAFS, and the Mathematical Practice Standards (MPS) are integrated throughout instruction

Lessons include an Introduction that frames new content in terms of a “big idea” question, Modeled and Guided Instruction, Guided Practice, and MAFS Practice problems. Across lesson sections, illustrated characters, or “Study Buddies,” appear in the margins to pose questions and provide tips to guide students’ thinking. Instruction emphasizes how the skills students are learning build across grade levels.

Across grades, the table of contents in both teacher and student editions reference the MAFS, including the Major Emphasis and Supporting and Additional Areas of Emphasis, addressed by each lesson. The table of contents in Teacher Resource Books also references the MPS embedded in instruction.
