New Product Reviews: CompuScholar Information Technology Materials

CompuScholar's Information Technology MaterialsLearning List has reviewed each of CompuScholar’s submissions for Texas’ Proclamation 2017 call for CTE products that support instruction in information technology courses. Each product is discussed briefly below:

  •  Java Programming (Abridged) is a web-based, computer science course for high school students. It is a two-semester course that addresses the Java programming language, a primary programming language used by today’s software industry.  This course requires no previous programming experience and supports instruction for Computer Science I.
  • TeenCoder: Windows Programming is a web-based, computer science course for high school students. Instruction addresses one of the primary programming languages, C#, used by today’s software industry.  Similar to Java Programming (Abridged), this course requires no previous programming experience and support instruction for Computer Science I.
  • Digital Savvy is comprehensive, year-long, online course that introduces students to concepts in information technology. Content meets the requirements for Principles of Information Technology courses. Instruction addresses a broad range of topics, including basics of computer hardware, operating systems, networks, social media, commonly used software programs (e.g., spreadsheets), and the role of technology in the workplace.
  • KidCoder: Web Design is a year-long, online course that covers all topics generally included in introductory web-design programs at the middle school and high school levels. Content addresses the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript skills needed to create websites. Instruction meets the requirements for Texas Web Technologies courses.

New Product Review: CS Matters in Maryland

UMBC's CS Matters (AP)Learning List has reviewed CS Matters in Maryland. This comprehensive open educational resource (OER) supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science Principles courses. Content is available online and includes printable teacher resources. Instruction is inquiry based and focuses on the theme of data. Students learn about internet data; processes for managing, analyzing, and interpreting data; and the use of data to solve real world problems. Resources are available at no cost at: www.csmatters.org.

CS Matters begins with an optional introductory unit (i.e., Unit 0) that provides a preview of the course’s content, how technology is evolving, and introduces the concept of computer intelligence and the role of algorithms. Core content is organized in six units: (1) Your Virtual World, (2) Developing Programming Tools, (3) Information and the Internet, (4) Data Acquisition, (5) Data Manipulation, and (6) Data Visualization.

The course uses the Python programming language; Python 3.4 and PyCharm Community Edition IDE software may be installed at no cost. A student text is not provided. CS Matters student materials are curated from a variety of free online resources (e.g., How to Think Like a Computer Scientist). Annual summer workshops for supporting the use of CS Matters in AP classrooms are held at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County

New Review: Perfection Learning Patterns of World History

Perfection Learning's Patterns of World HistoryLearning List has reviewed Perfection Learning’s Patterns of World History, Combined Volume, With Sources, 2nd Edition. This comprehensive product supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) World History courses. Content is available in print and eBook formats and includes additional online resources. Using broad historical patterns as an organizational structure (e.g., path breaking technological innovations), the text presents a narrative of world history that supports contextual understanding of the events and innovations that have shaped the world.

Core content is presented in six parts organized in terms of chronological periods: (1) From Human Origins to Early Agricultural Centers: Prehistory-600 BCE, (2) The Age of Empires and Visionaries: 600 BCE-600 CE, (3) The Formation of Religious Civilizations: 600-1450 CE, (4) Interactions Across the Globe: 1450-1750, (5) The Origins of Modernity: 1750-1900, and (6) From Three Modernities to One: 1914 to present. Each part begins with a two-page overview of the period and and its key patterns, a timeline, and a set of “Thinking Like a Historian Questions” to guide students’ reading (e.g., “How was each religious civilization of the period 600-1450 unique? How were these civilizations comparable?”).

Chapters end with a “Against the Grain” essays that provide opposing or contradictory narratives related to the period of study (e.g., Thor Heyerdahl’s theory that early Polynesians were descended from Peruvians) with questions to support analysis and discussion. End-of-chapter activities include “Patterns of Evidence,” which presents a set of textual and visual primary sources. A short introduction frames the context for each source, and each source is followed by several “Working With Sources” document-based questions.

New Product Review: Achieve 3000 for the California Common Core State Standards

Achieve3000Learning List recently reviewed Achieve3000’s products for alignment to the California Common Core State Standards. Achieve3000 provides supplemental, online literacy programs for students in grades 2-12.  Products include: KidBiz3000 (grades 2-5), TeenBiz3000 (grades 6-8), and Empower3000 (grades 9-12). Each product differentiates instruction according to each students’ individual, Lexile-based reading levels, ensuring all students have access to the same content irrespective of their reading ability.

New Review: Triumph Learning’s Texas Coach: Algebra I

Triumph Learning's Algebra I (TEKS)Learning List has reviewed Triumph Learning’s Texas Coach: Algebra I, Texas Edition. This supplemental program supports high school algebra instruction. Content is available in print and digital formats. Instruction provides a review and practice of the concepts and skills assessed on the STAAR end-of-course exam for Algebra I.

Texas Coach: Algebra I is presented in lessons that use the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) instructional model. Each lesson is made up of four components:

  1. Understand provides direct instruction in the underlying concept(s) that provides the foundation for the skills students will practice.
  2. Connect includes an example problem with a detailed step-by-step solution followed by a “Try” practice exercise.
  3. Coached Example presents guided practice problems that lead students through each step of the solution.
  4. Lesson Practice is a set of independent practice items that build in difficulty.

Texas Coach: Algebra I provides six chapter review tests and two full-length STAAR practice tests. Tests are made up of multiple-choice, griddable, and open-ended items, and include answer keys.
