New Review: Triumph Learning’s Texas Coach: Algebra I

Triumph Learning's Algebra I (TEKS)Learning List has reviewed Triumph Learning’s Texas Coach: Algebra I, Texas Edition. This supplemental program supports high school algebra instruction. Content is available in print and digital formats. Instruction provides a review and practice of the concepts and skills assessed on the STAAR end-of-course exam for Algebra I.

Texas Coach: Algebra I is presented in lessons that use the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) instructional model. Each lesson is made up of four components:

  1. Understand provides direct instruction in the underlying concept(s) that provides the foundation for the skills students will practice.
  2. Connect includes an example problem with a detailed step-by-step solution followed by a “Try” practice exercise.
  3. Coached Example presents guided practice problems that lead students through each step of the solution.
  4. Lesson Practice is a set of independent practice items that build in difficulty.

Texas Coach: Algebra I provides six chapter review tests and two full-length STAAR practice tests. Tests are made up of multiple-choice, griddable, and open-ended items, and include answer keys.

New Review: Bedford, Freeman & Worth’s (BFW) Calculus for the AP Course (Sullivan), 2nd Edition

BFW Calculus APLearning List has reviewed print materials for Bedford, Freeman & Worth’s (BFW) Calculus for the AP Course (Sullivan), 2nd Edition. This comprehensive product supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC courses. Content is available in print and digital formats.

Calculus for the AP Course begins with a “Chapter P: Preparing for Calculus” review of functions (e.g., inverse, logarithmic, exponential), sequences, summation notation, and the Binomial Theorem. Core content is presented in 11 chapters that cover limits and continuity, the derivative and its applications, integrals, the techniques and applications of integration, series, parametric equations, polar equations, and vector functions.

Instruction is project-based and focuses on the application of calculus to real-world problems. Each chapter opens with a case study of a real-world problem (e.g., managing a river’s flow) that students will solve when they have completed the chapter. The text provides many example problems with detailed step-by-step solutions, and annotations that describe the mathematical reasoning supporting each step. Examples include problems that illustrate the real-world applications of what students are learning (e.g., constructing a rain gutter).

About BFW*

BFW believes that what happens in the classroom matters, and that a good class, a good teacher, and good content have the power to change the world—one student and one idea at a time. BFW products have long been best-sellers for AP courses. Now, in response to the needs of teachers across the country, BFW offers materials for Common Core, elective courses, and on-level programs aligned to NGSS.

New Review: Perfection Learning’s AP Calculus AB/BC, Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examinations

Perfection Learning's AP Calculus AB/BCLearning List has reviewed Perfection Learning’s AP Calculus AB/BC, Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examinations, which is a comprehensive product that supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC courses. Content is available in print format. The text provides a review of the prerequisite concepts (e.g., functions) for calculus and focused reviews of the concepts that make up each of the Big Ideas for AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC.

Instruction begins with a set of six lessons that review prerequisite concepts, such as functions, inverses, and parametric equations, followed by an assessment of these concepts. Core content is organized in four “Main Ideas” that match the College Board’s Big Ideas for AP Calculus: (1) limits, (2) derivatives, (3) integrals and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, and (4) series (BC only). Each Main Idea is broken into a set of lessons that provide a focused review of key concepts (e.g., The Trapezoidal Rule, logistic change).  Main Idea lessons begin with a list of concepts and are broken into short sections that “Explain” each concept.

When students have completed each of the lessons in a Main Idea, they are presented with a “Summary Assessment” with questions that reflect that format of the AP exam. Each Summary Assessment includes a “Correlation Chart” that enables students to identify the concepts they have not mastered and redirects them to specific lessons in the Main Idea for further review. The text ends with four full-length comprehensive practice exams formatted to reflect the AP exams. Two exams are for Calculus AB and two exams are for Calculus BC.

New Review: CPM Educational Program’s AP Calculus, 3rd Edition

CPM's AP Calculus, 3rd Edition CPM Educational Program’s AP Calculus, 3rd Edition is a comprehensive single-variable calculus text that supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC courses. Resources are available in print and eBook formats. Learning List recently reviewed eBook materials for AP Calculus AB and BC.  Reviewers found the College Board’s big ideas, enduring understandings, and essential knowledge for AP Calculus AB and BC to be well addressed in course resources. Reviewers said that the course covers these concepts effectively in a rigorous, non-traditional format that requires students to investigate and connect new concepts and strategies.

CPM’s Calculus non-traditional approach to presenting content does not include some familiar features of a mathematics text, such as an instructional narrative and example problems with step-by-step solutions. Instead, instruction emphasizes “Study Teams” made up of two to four students who work together to discover strategies and solutions. Teams work together to answer questions, justify their reasoning, and identify multiple solution strategies. The teachers’ role is to encourage students’ teamwork, facilitate discussions, and provide support when teams encounter questions they are unable to answer. Learning List’s reviewers noted that CPM’s inquiry-based approach to instruction facilitates the integration of the College Board’s Mathematical Practices for AP Calculus (MPACs), explaining that students use the MPACs each day in their work in Study Teams.

Teacher resources include background and strategies (e.g., Math Chat) to support the implementation of Study Teams. Many lessons also include recorded podcasts, or “Mathcasts,” in which an expert teacher walks users through the lesson providing background information and suggesting teaching strategies. A “Teacher Support” appendix provides information about the course’s interactive math tools, links to each Mathcast video, printable resources for some lessons (e.g., polar graph paper), professional development information, SmartBoard files for each chapter, CPM Newsletters, and errata files.

The text covers content for AP Calculus AB and BC courses.

Calculus opens with preface that discusses the AP Calculus exam and test preparation strategies. Core content is presented in 16 chapters that present content in a linear and logical manner. The first half of the course begins with a “Chapter P: Preparation for Calculus” that reviews key concepts needed for the study of calculus (e.g., linear models, rates of change, inverse functions), and then covers limits, differentiation, integration, differential equations, integration techniques, and logarithmic, exponential, and transcendental functions. The second half of the course addresses infinite series; conics, parametric equations, and polar coordinates; vectors and the geometry of space; vector-valued functions; functions of several variables; multiple integration; and vector analysis. Chapter 16 is available online and presents “Additional Topics in Differential Equations,” such as first-order equations and series solutions of differential equations.

Instruction supports discovery learning and the synthesis of the College Board’s big ideas for AP Calculus. Margin notes throughout the text support students’ preparation for AP exams and end-of-chapter exercises include questions formatted to reflect the AP exam. The level of rigor in instruction, in problem sets, and in AP Practice Questions matches that of the AP exam.
