New Review: Perfection Learning’s World History, Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination

Perfection LearningLearning List has reviewed Perfection Learning’s World History, Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination, which is a comprehensive product that supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) World History courses. Content is available in print format. Core content is presented in six chronological periods that match the periods identified in the College Board’s course framework for AP World History (e.g., Period 4: Global Interactions, 1450-1750).

Each period is broken into chapters that cover the history of particular regions during the period (e.g., “Chapter 17: Africa in the Early Colonial Period”).  Chapters include a “Historical Perspectives” feature and the paired features: “Think As a Historian,” and “Write As a Historian.” Historical Perspectives provides two or more historians’ differing perspectives on historical developments (e.g., “Was Alexander great?”).  Think As a Historian and Write As a Historian are short activities addressing historical thinking skills and their use in written arguments.

Chapters end with sets of stimulus-based multiple-choice questions and short-answer questions formatted to reflect the AP exam. Each period ends with one document-based question and several long-essay questions. The text ends with a full practice exam that reflects the AP U.S. World Exam in length and format.

New Review: Perfection Learning’s AP Calculus AB/BC, Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examinations

Perfection Learning's AP Calculus AB/BCLearning List has reviewed Perfection Learning’s AP Calculus AB/BC, Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examinations, which is a comprehensive product that supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC courses. Content is available in print format. The text provides a review of the prerequisite concepts (e.g., functions) for calculus and focused reviews of the concepts that make up each of the Big Ideas for AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC.

Instruction begins with a set of six lessons that review prerequisite concepts, such as functions, inverses, and parametric equations, followed by an assessment of these concepts. Core content is organized in four “Main Ideas” that match the College Board’s Big Ideas for AP Calculus: (1) limits, (2) derivatives, (3) integrals and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, and (4) series (BC only). Each Main Idea is broken into a set of lessons that provide a focused review of key concepts (e.g., The Trapezoidal Rule, logistic change).  Main Idea lessons begin with a list of concepts and are broken into short sections that “Explain” each concept.

When students have completed each of the lessons in a Main Idea, they are presented with a “Summary Assessment” with questions that reflect that format of the AP exam. Each Summary Assessment includes a “Correlation Chart” that enables students to identify the concepts they have not mastered and redirects them to specific lessons in the Main Idea for further review. The text ends with four full-length comprehensive practice exams formatted to reflect the AP exams. Two exams are for Calculus AB and two exams are for Calculus BC.

New Review: Perfection Learning’s Of the People, A History of the United States, 3rd Edition

Learning List has reviewed Perfection Learning’s Of the People, A History of the United StatesPerfection Learning's Of the People, A History of the United States, 3rd Edition, 3rd Edition. This two-volume resource supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) United States History courses. Content is available in print and eBook formats with additional online resources. Instruction focuses on the centrality of democracy to the American way of life, including the struggle to create and preserve the American democracy and how democracy shapes American social and political understandings.

Core content for Volume 1 is organized in 13 chapters that address specific periods in American history from 1450 to 1877. Volume 2 is made up of 15 chapters that address specific periods from 1865 to 2014.  Each chapter opens with a striking visual (e.g., painting), an outline of content, a set of “Common Threads” questions that focus students on the chapter’s key themes, and an “American Portrait” feature that provides a short biography of an individual(s) whose experiences embody the period’s themes.

Each chapter includes a “Struggles for Democracy” feature that discusses issues that prompted controversy and debate in the period. Some chapters also have “American Landscape” and “America and the World” features.  American Landscape details a particular place and moment in which issues of power come into clear focus (e.g., the growing lifestyle differences between the wealthy and the poor in Philadelphia, 1780-1790). America in the World helps frame events in American history in the larger global context.

Two of the most recent instructional materials reviews published on Learning List are science subjects. Perfection Learning provides comprehensive textbooks for introductory high school courses in earth science and marine science. Earth Science: The Physical Setting is a full-year course that explores topics in astronomy, meteorology, geology, and oceanography.  The course introduces fundamental concepts while developing students’ problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Instruction includes connections to mathematics, but most problems can be solved with skills learned in middle school and do not require high school algebra.

Marine Science: Marine Biology and Oceanography is an interdisciplinary course in marine science that combines topics in biology, chemistry, geology, and physics. Chapters include sections that introduce students to historical events and pioneers in marine science (e.g., Jacques-Yves Cousteau), ongoing marine science research, the role of technology in studying marine life, and issues in conservation. Frequent research projects and lab investigations allow students to explore topics in depth and make connections to real-world issues and events.

Both textbooks are organized to support readability and comprehension. Chapters begin by clarifying objectives and identifying new vocabulary. Content is presented in manageable blocks of text with vivid visual elements, such as photographs, illustrations, tables and charts. Student editions are easy to use and are written with clear language that will be accessible to most high school students. Teacher’s Manuals for each textbook are available separately from the publisher. Teacher resources include comprehensive lesson plans that clarify learning objectives and the materials required for each lesson. Lesson plans suggest the sequencing and pacing of instruction and provide activities to motivate and develop student learning.
