New Product Review: Perfection Learning’s Benson Handwriting with Reading and Language Arts

New Product Review: Perfection Learning’s Benson Handwriting with Reading and Language Arts

Perfection Learning’s Benson Handwriting with Reading and Language Arts is a comprehensive handwriting product for students in grades K-5. Core content is available in print format and includes software-based and online resources. This review is of print materials only. Handwriting instruction emphasizes fluency and legibility. Students learn to print in grades K and 1, and to use cursive in grades 2 and 3. At grades 4 and 5, students apply handwriting skills in tasks related to English language arts and reading (ELAR). Learning List also reviewed Benson Escritura, the Spanish-language version of Benson Handwriting.

Benson Handwriting organizes content in grades K-3 in units that group letters based on the strokes used to form the letters. For example, in grades K and 1, the printed letters L, I, T, and F are grouped in a unit because they begin with same pencil stroke. Students transition from print to cursive in grade 2. Workbooks at grades 4 and 5 revisit handwriting basics (e.g., letter and number formation), but most instruction is delivered in lessons that address ELAR/SLAR content such as root words, subject/verb agreement, and approaches to text structure (e.g., compare/contrast). Perfection Learning's Patterns of World HistoryLearning List has reviewed Perfection Learning’s Patterns of World History, Combined Volume, With Sources, 2nd Edition. This comprehensive product supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) World History courses. Content is available in print and eBook formats and includes additional online resources. Using broad historical patterns as an organizational structure (e.g., path breaking technological innovations), the text presents a narrative of world history that supports contextual understanding of the events and innovations that have shaped the world.

Core content is presented in six parts organized in terms of chronological periods: (1) From Human Origins to Early Agricultural Centers: Prehistory-600 BCE, (2) The Age of Empires and Visionaries: 600 BCE-600 CE, (3) The Formation of Religious Civilizations: 600-1450 CE, (4) Interactions Across the Globe: 1450-1750, (5) The Origins of Modernity: 1750-1900, and (6) From Three Modernities to One: 1914 to present. Each part begins with a two-page overview of the period and and its key patterns, a timeline, and a set of “Thinking Like a Historian Questions” to guide students’ reading (e.g., “How was each religious civilization of the period 600-1450 unique? How were these civilizations comparable?”).

Chapters end with a “Against the Grain” essays that provide opposing or contradictory narratives related to the period of study (e.g., Thor Heyerdahl’s theory that early Polynesians were descended from Peruvians) with questions to support analysis and discussion. End-of-chapter activities include “Patterns of Evidence,” which presents a set of textual and visual primary sources. A short introduction frames the context for each source, and each source is followed by several “Working With Sources” document-based questions.

New Review: Perfection Learning’s World History, Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination

Perfection LearningLearning List has reviewed Perfection Learning’s World History, Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination, which is a comprehensive product that supports instruction in Advanced Placement (AP) World History courses. Content is available in print format. Core content is presented in six chronological periods that match the periods identified in the College Board’s course framework for AP World History (e.g., Period 4: Global Interactions, 1450-1750).

Each period is broken into chapters that cover the history of particular regions during the period (e.g., “Chapter 17: Africa in the Early Colonial Period”).  Chapters include a “Historical Perspectives” feature and the paired features: “Think As a Historian,” and “Write As a Historian.” Historical Perspectives provides two or more historians’ differing perspectives on historical developments (e.g., “Was Alexander great?”).  Think As a Historian and Write As a Historian are short activities addressing historical thinking skills and their use in written arguments.

Chapters end with sets of stimulus-based multiple-choice questions and short-answer questions formatted to reflect the AP exam. Each period ends with one document-based question and several long-essay questions. The text ends with a full practice exam that reflects the AP U.S. World Exam in length and format.
