New Product Review: Goodheart-Willcox Foundations of Financial Literacy

Learning List recently reviewed the Goodheart-Willcox Company’s Foundations of Financial Literacy, 10th Edition, which was submitted for state adoption in Texas in response to the Texas Education Agency’s Proclamation 2019 call for high school Personal Financial Literacy products aligned to the new PFL Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Foundations of Financial Literacy is available in print and eBook formats and include additional online components. Instruction focuses on developing competent consumers by introducing students to concepts in personal finance.

Foundations of Financial Literacy presents content in six units titled: (1) Financial Literacy, (2) Protecting Your Finances, (3) Managing Your Spending, (4) Purchasing and Protecting Your Assets, (5) Exploring Economics, and (6) Preparing for Your Career. Frequently Asked Questions About Learning List

As the school year shifts into high gear, we are getting a lot of questions about our service. Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions.

What is Learning List?
Learning List is a subscription-based instructional materials review service designed to help improve student learning by empowering educators to chooseand use instructional materials most effectively.

We created Learning List in 2013 to help districts become better informed consumers of instructional materials. Initially, districts used our reviews to facilitate their selection of materials. Over time, subscribers began telling us that our reviews also helped them identify the best parts of their existing materials to use to teach each standard. As one instructional coach explained, “We use your alignment reports as a GPS through our materials to ensure that we’re using the pages that teach each standard fully.”

What types of materials do you review?
We have reviewed over 2500 of the most widely used instructional materials, including:

  • Materials in the four core subjects, 12 Advanced Placement courses, Tech Apps and 85 CTE courses;
  • Comprehensive and supplemental materials, including RtI, testprep, criterion-referenced test banks, and professional development resources;
  • Publisher produced and free open educational resources (OERs);
  • State-adopted and non-adopted materials (i.e., materials that were not submitted for state adoption); and
  • English and Spanish versions of materials.

Review: Career and Technical Education (CTE) Resources

books-659690_1280Very few products we reviewed are specific to Texas or include direct references to the TEKS in teacher and/or student materials. However, some products contain supplemental resources, such as lesson plans and correlation documents, to help Texas teachers plan TEKS-aligned instruction. Surprisingly, some products that include Texas in their titles (e.g., Pearson’s “Texas Manufacturing Welding”) do not include references to the TEKS. This is likely due to the fact that many CTE products, while suitable for high school instruction, are designed to meet the needs of community college students and students in career and technical schools. This comprehensive product supports instruction in high school graphic design and illustration courses.  Content is available in print and eBook formats and includes additional online components.  Instruction introduces students to concepts in graphic and web design. New Product Reviews: CompuScholar Information Technology Materials

CompuScholar's Information Technology MaterialsLearning List has reviewed each of CompuScholar’s submissions for Texas’ Proclamation 2017 call for CTE products that support instruction in information technology courses. Each product is discussed briefly below:

  •  Java Programming (Abridged) is a web-based, computer science course for high school students. It is a two-semester course that addresses the Java programming language, a primary programming language used by today’s software industry.  This course requires no previous programming experience and supports instruction for Computer Science I.
  • TeenCoder: Windows Programming is a web-based, computer science course for high school students. Instruction addresses one of the primary programming languages, C#, used by today’s software industry.  Similar to Java Programming (Abridged), this course requires no previous programming experience and support instruction for Computer Science I.
  • Digital Savvy is comprehensive, year-long, online course that introduces students to concepts in information technology. Content meets the requirements for Principles of Information Technology courses. Instruction addresses a broad range of topics, including basics of computer hardware, operating systems, networks, social media, commonly used software programs (e.g., spreadsheets), and the role of technology in the workplace.
  • KidCoder: Web Design is a year-long, online course that covers all topics generally included in introductory web-design programs at the middle school and high school levels. Content addresses the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript skills needed to create websites. Instruction meets the requirements for Texas Web Technologies courses.
