New Review: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s English 3D

LeaHoughton Mifflin Harcourt’s English 3Drning List has reviewed Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s English 3D, which is a supplemental resource to support the acquisition of language skills for English language learners and other students with language deficiencies in grades 4-12. Resources are available in print format. Additional online materials for grades 4-8 are available at HMH Teacher Central, and some resources for grades 9-12 are on CD-ROM. Instruction focuses on improving students’ linguistic and academic skill sets during dedicated time for language development.

Instruction is systematic and explicit and focuses on learning and practicing the English language skills, including contextually appropriate language, fluency skills, and purposeful speaking and writing.  Across grade levels, student materials include “Issues Books” and “Language & Writing Portfolios.” Issue Books contain cross-curricular informational and literary texts addressing particular issues of interest to students.  Portfolios are “interactive worktexts” that support vocabulary acquisition, collaborative learning experiences, and the development of written and spoken language skills.

Issues Books address real-world issues relevant to students’ lives, such making health choices, street art, and bullying. The texts build in complexity across the school year. In terms of Lexile (L) levels, texts for grades 4 and 5 range from 770L to 980L, texts for grades 6-8 range from 830L to 1270L, and texts for grades 9-12 range from 890L to 1410L. For each Issue, the Language & Writing Portfolios contain worksheets, graphic organizers, sentence frames (e.g., “Based on my experience, video games mostly [harm/benefit] teens because they are ____ [adjective: enjoyable, distracting] and_____ [adjective: relaxing, violent]”), self-assessment rubrics, and other resources to support student learning. Each Issue concludes with a summative test and English 3D includes beginning-of-the-year, mid-year, and end-of-year assessments of academic language.

New Review: Benchmark Education’s Benchmark Advance

[Source: Benchmark Education]

Learning List recently reviewed Benchmark Education’s Benchmark Advance.  This comprehensive product is developed to address the California English language arts/reading (ELAR) and English language development (ELD) instructional frameworks for grades K-6. Resources are available in print and eBook formats. Instruction develops close reading skills and addresses the five themes of the California frameworks: Content Knowledge, Making Meaning, Foundational Skills, Language Development, and Effective Expression.

Benchmark Advance organizes content in ten 3-week units that focus on a single topic (e.g., Developing a Nation). Units focus on specific “knowledge strands” (e.g., character, life science, economics) and include content addressed by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and California History and Social Studies Standards (HSS). Instruction relies on the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) and incorporates predictable routines (e.g., read alouds). Each unit’s first week focuses on modeling and guided practice and weeks two and three provide opportunities for students to apply and extend what they have learned.

Resources include “Texts for Close Reading,” “Texts for English Language Development,” and “Reader’s Theater” scripts. Texts for Close Reading are available as print consumables and eBooks. Print books have space for notes and numbered paragraphs that help students cite evidence from the text in written and spoken communication. eBooks contain interactive annotation tools (e.g., highlighters and note taking tools). Texts for English Language Development help English language learners and struggling readers build the skills to become on-level readers. Students develop fluency skills using engaging Reader’s Theater scripts. Units include sets of resources to support small group instruction, including letter and high frequency word flashcards.

New Review: Summit K-12’s ConceptLinks

summit k12

[Source: Summit K-12]

Learning List recently reviewed Summit K-12’s comprehensive resources to support science and literacy instruction in grades 2-8. Materials are available in print and eBook formats with additional interactive components. Instruction integrates science content with informational literacy skills and addresses the reading, writing, speaking, and listening strands of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) at each grade level. Resources at each grade level support struggling readers and English language learners.

Summit K-12 provides a set of integrated products that address topics in life science, physical science, earth and space science, and environmental science. Products include: (1) “ConceptLinks” interactive eBooks, (2) “Concept Booster” mini-lessons, and (3) “Vocabulary Booster” digital flashcards.

  1. ConceptLinks interactive eBooks are a set of 64 readers that address 16 science topics (e.g., animals, cells, weather). For each topic, eBooks are presented at four Lexile-based reading levels: Blue (450L-560L), Green (540L-720L), Orange (660L-790L), and Purple (720L-850L). eBooks are not grade specific and may be used to support students across grades 2-8, depending upon their reading abilities.
  2. Concept Booster mini-lessons are grade specific and address the science and English language arts/reading TEKS for the given grade level. Mini-lessons are built around interactive e-Posters that present images which facilitate the discussion of new concepts and vocabulary.
  3. Vocabulary Booster interactive flashcards contain an image and sentence with a missing word on one side. For example, an image of a toad is paired with the sentence, “Dry and bumpy are two [blank] of this toad’s skin.”). The flip side of the card contains the correct term (e.g., “physical properties”), the term’s definition, and additional practice sentences for students to complete (e.g., “One physical property of a/an [blank] is its bright color.”).
